California sea lion Mayhem is easily one of my favorite patients I got to work with in over 18 years at The Marine Mammal Center. Our paths were intertwined from the beginning, and I’m so glad I got to play a part in getting this big boy back into the ocean! Mayhem was picked up in San Luis Obispo, and by a stroke of luck I was visiting just in time to help drive him back to the TMMC hospital in Sausalito. During the long, hot drive, we stopped frequently to buy bags of ice and bum a hose off a gas station so we could help cool him down. I’ll never forget climbing up into the truck bed, shoving ice into his big metal carrier, and hearing him suckle on ice cubes. Not only did I bring him up the coast, I was there to see him head back home to the ocean at his release just a few months later! The best full circle moment.

Mayhem was big, handsome, regal, a little haughty. He was quiet but powerful, and a real success story. I’m always happy to see his smug little face staring back at me on my water bottle.
