For months I’ve been coming back to this memory of a video I had seen of a sea lion underwater. It was twirling, zooming, carefree, fat, happy, and thriving. It was also wearing an orange flipper tag. It wasn’t even a patient I had worked with, but this video of any rehab patient not only being resighted, but embodying the pure joy and agility a sea lion should embody was such an impactful reminder of what lives they could be living after release. It was a glimpse into a life we rarely get to see, and one that makes me proud and hopeful for all the patients I’ve gotten to see go back home. That feeling stuck with me, and I always hope that our patients are out there, home free and happy.
